The story of a name

In 1958 , growers of Vieil Armand hills have decided to give new impetus to the wine industry in southern Alsace and , working together , have created The Vieil Armand Cave . The founders chose the name "Old Armand " after the place name used to designate the top of Hartmannswillerkopf . This mountain whose slopes are strewn with vines today , was one of the greatest battlefields of the First World War (1914-1918) .

The Vieil Armand name came from the use of journalists and French soldiers who could not easily pronounce the name of Hartmannswillerkopf .

The champagnes of Maison Billecart-Salmon are above all created thanks to the knowledge of the men who rigorously cultivate an estate of 100 hectares, obtaining grapes from an area totalling 300 hectares across 40 crus of the Champagne region. The majority of the grapes used for vinification come from a radius of 20km around Epernay, where the Grand Crus of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay co-exist, in the ethereal vineyards of the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs.
